A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has stopped the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission from charging N10 million and N5 million from contestants running for the offices of Chairman/Vice Chairman and Councillor in the forthcoming local government election.
The presiding judge, Justice Emeka Nwite, granted the order on Wednesday.
The suit was filed by three political parties: Action Peoples Party, Action Democratic Party, and Social Democratic Party.
The only defendant in the case is the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission.
A copy of the court order read: “An order of interim injunction restraining the defendant from imposing and/or collecting the sums of N10 million and N5 million from contestants for the offices of Chairman/Vice Chairman and Councillorship in the forthcoming local government election to be conducted on November 30, 2024, or any earlier date fixed by the defendant, pending the hearing and determination of the originating summons filed by the plaintiffs.”
The case has been adjourned to September 25, 2024, for a hearing.
