A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court sitting in Yaba, on Friday remanded five men for alleged conspiracy and the murder of an Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mathew Aniaguru, in the Imota area of the state.

The defendants, Shakiru Shittu, Kadir Shonoki, Shadiku Adeola, Taofeek Aluko, and Adekunle Onasanya, were remanded by Magistrate P. E. Nwaka, on two counts of conspiracy and murder.

The prosecutor, Thomas Nurudeen, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on April 6, 2023, at the Emuren Junction, Imota, in the Ikorodu area of the state.

It was disclosed that the defendants and some police officers on official duty were engaged in a gun duel when the police officer was shot.

The prosecutor said, “The Divisional Police Officer at Imota received a distress call from one ASP Adamu Audu that they were being attacked by some unknown gunmen at Emuren Junction on that day, and during the attack, the defendants shot and killed ASP M Aniaguru.

“They also collected his AK 47 rifle with 10 rounds of ammunition and that of another officer on patrol duty with him that same day.”

It was also disclosed that the police later raided and arrested the defendants at Adamo in Ikorodu and that they were arrested with charms, arms and cutlasses.

The charge was read to the defendants but the magistrate did not take their pleas.

The prosecutor, Nurudeen, then prayed the court to remand the defendants while they carried out further investigation and arrest of the other culprits at large.

Granting the request, Nwaka, ordered that the defendants be remanded, adding that the case file be duplicated and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Nwaka adjourned the case till May 31, 2023, for mention.
