The Bauchi State Independent Electoral Commission has announced plans to conduct a by-election in the Shira Local Government Area to fill the vacancies created by the impeachment of the council’s chairman and deputy.
Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, BASIEC Chairman, Ahmad Makama, said the move became necessary following the removal of Chairman Abdullahi Beli and his deputy, Usman Adamu, by members of the Shira Local Government Council over allegations of maladministration.
Makama revealed that the commission had finalised arrangements for training ad hoc staff and making other logistical preparations to ensure the successful conduct of the election.
He stated that the by-election is scheduled for May 24, 2025.
“We are committed to conducting free, fair, and credible elections that truly reflect the will of the people,” Makama said, urging political parties to strictly adhere to electoral guidelines and rules.
He also called on stakeholders—including traditional rulers, community leaders, and civil society organisations—to support the commission in ensuring a peaceful and transparent process.
In March, the Shira Local Government Council impeached Chairman Abdullahi Beli and his deputy, Usman Adamu, following findings from an investigative committee.
In a statement led by Council Chairman Wali Adamu and issued under resolution number SLGLC/003, the council disclosed that both officials were found guilty of gross misconduct, financial mismanagement, dereliction of duty, and abuse of office.
“The removal of the chairman and his deputy was based on the committee’s report, which established that they breached public trust through poor financial conduct and failure to perform their official responsibilities,” Adamu said.
