After months of intense politicking, horse-trading and maneuvering, the Association of Resident Doctors of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (ARD-LUTH) held an election whose outcome would resonate within and beyond the foremost tertiary hospital for a long time. It was an exercise in which the voice of idealism and vibrancy, as well as a blend of sparkling intelligence and a forward-looking worldview triumphed.
At the end of the voting, which attracted quite a healthy turnout of participants, the voice and choice of the resident doctors echoed loud and clear, as they elected a female candidate as their President – and in the process charted their desired course for a fresh breath of capability, capacity and competence.
In a keenly-contested vote, Dr Kemi Abiloye pulled a total vote of 170, leaving her rival, Dr Salau Oluwafemi with 32 votes, while 5 votes were voided.
