Alliance Law Firm Unveils Programme for 2019 Annual Lecture

In the first of its annual lectures in 2108, which was held at the Radisson Blu Hotel on Victoria Island, Lagos, Alliance Law Firm laid an indelible marker for future discussions on the social, political and economic direction of Nigeria – and the expected role of law firms in all the transitions our country is set to undergo – when speakers and panelists examined the nature of corporate governance in the country, and make insightful but practical and proactive recommendations on how this vital aspect of management could be enhanced for the maximum of the nation and its people.

Alluding to the success of last year’s discourse in a recent press briefing on the 2019 Lecture Programme, Uche Val Obi, SAN, the Managing Partner of Alliance Law Firm, expressed satisfaction at the impact the discourse, and the recommendations that flowed therefrom, have had on the polity so far – especially as the Lecture took place just weeks before the official publication of the Nigerian Corporate Governance Code.

At the briefing, which was graced by a number of Mr. Obi’s colleagues at the firm, he told the assembled newsmen that the 2019 event, which is slated for Tuesday, November 26, 2019 at the Four Points by Sheraton in Lagos, would attract some of the most influential legal, managerial and socio-cultural minds in Nigeria and beyond, who would bring their extensive expertise, experience and learning to bear on the theme, ‘LEVERAGING ON TECHNOLOGY TO DEVELOP AND REBRAND NIGERIA.’ Obi disclosed that one of Nigeria’s foremost leaders in digital technology, Leo Stan Ekeh, who is the founder and chairman of the Zinox Group, and Chairman of the Konga.com online mall, would be the keynote lecture at the event, which would be chaired by the former CEO of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and current chairman of MTN Nigeria, Dr. Ernest Ndukwe, OFR. Heavyweights such as Patrick Akinwontan (MD of Ecobank); Andrew Nevin (Chief Economist of Price Waterhouse Coopers Nigeria/West Africa); Dr. Segun Aina (President of Fintech); and others are confirmed to speak at the 2019 Alliance Law Lecture.

Describing technology as pivotal to the transformation of the Nigerian economy in the 21st century and beyond – especially its quest for industrial development, Obi said the event – which is essentially a leadership training forum and therefore would draw most of its attendance from management executives from key players in Corporate Nigeria – aims to interrogate the technological gap between Nigeria and the advanced economies of the world, and ask the critical question of what exactly Nigeria is doing, or intends to do, about the disruptive technologies that are even now redefining the way we conduct our affairs in various aspects of life. Far from being a lawyer-dominated event, he emphasized, the 2019 Alliance Lecture would take on the character of a business as well as a networking session for participants.

The Managing Partner also disclosed that the event would also feature the formal unveiling of the law firm’s recently-published Doing Business in Nigeria Manual. This, he said, was to underscore the firm’s well-established reputation as an internationally regarded commercial law which, among other accomplishments, is a contributor to the IMF/World Bank’s Global Doing Business Index publications.
