Alegehlaw Foundation; a Practice Support Scheme, was founded to offer legal support by equipping Young Lawyers with various tools and practice solution for a successful career in law.”

NEWSWIRE Law & Events Magazine’s correspondent in Lagos reports that the celebration was graced by the cream of the nation’s legal profession, as well as other leading lights in the society. Present at the occasion were the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice of Lagos State, Mr. Adeniji Kazeem; former NBA President, Mr. Okey Wali, SAN; NBA Section of Business Law Chairman, Olumide Akpata; a former partner at the Alegeh & Co., Hon Justice Nehizena Afolabi (FHC); Mr. Ferdinand Orbih, SAN; Very Rev. Fr. Ethelbert Ukpabi; former governor of Delta State, Onanefe Ibori among others..

Extolling the virtues of Augustine Alegeh, SAN as a multi-dimensional lawyer and gentleman, in his speech, Okey Wali, SAN described him as a passionate legal practitioner whose interest is the issue of the welfare of young lawyers and the need for remuneration for lawyers in pupilage. The former NBA President expressed disapproval with the use of uncouth language on some learned seniors by junior members, describing such ill-mannered and unrefined attitudes as barbaric and unacceptable.

In his own remarks, Chairman of the NBA Section on Business Law, Mr. Olumide Akpata, congratulated the Alegeh law firm and company and thanked God for this major milestone in the career of the former nba president. “This is about legacy and not really about Austin Alegeh, it’s about the law firm.”

Akpata said, from one who had spent over two and half decades partaking in the building of a law firm, “I wish him well and I’m really happy for this milestone.”

“I also share with him that passion for capacity building for young lawyers. The problems is not that there are too many lawyers in Nigeria, it’s that there too many lawyers doing the same thing. And if we are able to build capacity we would find out that even as a profession there is not enough of us to service the large economy of this nation,” Akpata said.

“The SBL Chairman commended the Alegeh Foundation for what it is doing for young lawyers.”

“The lack of attention to the re-training and retooling of our young Lawyers is a source of concern to some senior lawyers in the country. New wigs are just thrown into the deep end and are expected to be successful at their craft without the required training and preparation for the challenges of the legal Profession.”

In his remarks, the Principal/Founding Partner of Alegeh & Co. and immediate past President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), acknowledged the efforts of certain colleagues, Law Offices and groups that offer some support, training and mentoring to young lawyers and commend their efforts. He urges them to continue their efforts along that noble path.

Alegeh said, “It was apparent that such opportunities are only available to a limited and very lucky few who are fortunate to enjoy the available limited facilities.”

“Our thrust in AlegehLaw Foundation would be to design programmes that would benefit a greater number of the younger ones in our Profession. We would embrace and apply available communication platforms and alternative and revolutionary methods to ensure that help gets to the majority. That is our focus. That is our quest. That is our dream,” he said.

“To the Young Lawyers, the learned silk said, “we believe firmly in your future as successors of our Noble profession, and that is why we are investing in your future. We hope that the Foundation’s impact would be immeasurable, remarkable and enviable. The growth and development of our Country is dependent on the work that we do as Lawyers. If Lawyers do their work the Country and its people would benefit. Our Country needs a lot of lawyering and our young lawyers must be made ready to fight the battles that we have failed to win. Our support to them is our contribution to the legal Profession and our Country.”

Many are willing to lend their support so our task would be to harvest these willing hands and create a platform for them to be able to give back to the profession that has given so much to them.

The core objectives of the Foundation are:

  • To liaise and support with Law Faculties in the various tertiary institutions in Nigeria to proffer support to Law undergraduates.
  • Provide adequate 1(one) month training programmes for young Lawyers in collaboration with established Law firms.
  • With the support and collaboration of other advisory groups and interested stakeholders, to champion the agitation for the improvement of the standard of young lawyers for the overall sustenance of excellent practice of Law.
  • Identify and secure the support of leading but willing Law Firms in as well as accredited Law Faculties and the Nigerian Law School in providing necessary but sustainable support for young and aspiring lawyers.
  • In order to reach the widest audience possible, the Alegeh law Foundation will invest in e- learning.
  • Collaborating with the National Universities Commission, the Council of Legal Education and Law Faculties to develop appropriate curriculum for the advancement of Law practice and the Legal profession in general.

Our commitment to the core ideals of the Foundation is rooted in our belief in the undeniable fact that the foundation for a successful practice of Law begins essentially from the universities and to a considerable extent the Law school.

Accordingly, we consider it an important requirement that a Foundation such as ours must provide the needed support for young Lawyers.

AlegehLaw Foundation is taking its first step towards actualising the core objective of reaching out to a wider group of young lawyers by partnering with Law Pavilion which provides an electronic Law Library for Lawyers to provide a 1-year premium law pavilion package for five hundred (500) young lawyers.

The partnership with Law Pavilion, is said to be the beginning of the projects of the foundation. And it is hoped that other law firms will join the initiative and possibly increase the current subscription to 1000. Another group of concerned citizens or Law firm could increase the scope and rotate it among themselves just to ensure it remains available.
