Adebayo Faleti, A Zealous Promoter of Culture is Dead

A renown Yoruba veteran actor, broadcaster, poet and writer, Chief Adebayo Faleti has passed away.

Adebayo, an old student of Ibadan Boys High School died Sunday morning at University College Hospital, Ibadan at about 6. am according to sources.

Chief Adebayo who happened to be one of the pioneer staff of the first television station in Africa, Western Nigeria Television (WNTV) died at the age of 86.

He was responsible for translating Nigeria’s National Anthem from English to Yoruba. He also translated speeches being made by military president of Nigeria, Ibrahim Babangida and Chief Ernest Shonekan, Head of National Interim Government of Nigeria, from English to Yoruba.

Faleti has published a dictionary containing the formal or official use of Yoruba names.

He has received many awards, both locally and internationally, including the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) the Festival of Arts award with Eda Ko L’aropin and the Afro-Hollywood Award for Outstanding Performance in Arts.

A family source who confirmed his death informed journalists that his body has been taken to anatomy section at the UCH.

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has described as sad, the death of veteran broadcaster and actor, Pa Adebayo Faleti.

The governor described the deceased as a zealous promoter of culture, noting that his works will always be cherished.

Amosun also stated that the poet and writer will be remembered for his contributions to the birth and growth of the Broadcast Industry, particularly the Television.

“Baba Faleti, as a broadcaster, poet and writer targeted his energy at the promotion of culture and his death at this time is regrettable. His sound wisdom would have been valuable now that we are all battling to restore our fading traditional values.

“He will be missed by all Nigerians, especially broadcast and theatre practitioners, who regard him as a role model”, the governor added.

We prayed to the Almighty God to grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss as his creative and gentle soul rest in peace.
