Abia State LGA Election Encounters Setback, As Court Grants Order Restraining ABSIEC

The Abia State Local Government election which is billed to hold on the 19th of May 2023, has suffered a setback as an order restraining Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC) from organizing the said election has been granted.

Based on intelligence and court papers obtained by ALL FACTS NEWSPAPER, Honorable Justice Benson C. Anya of the Abia State High Court Arochukwu Division granted the order in a suit filed by Engr. Nwabueze Onwuneme (Suit No: HAR /8/2023) with Abia State Independent Electoral Commission (ABSIEC), Prof. Mkpa Agu Mkpa, Attorney General of Abia State, and Governor of Abia State as defendants.

The order which was granted on the 23rd of March 2023, restrained ABSIEC from organizing or conducting any election and restrained ABSIEC from acting on any election timetable or programme pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.

The suit was then adjourned to the 23rd of April 2023 for the motion on notice.

This said election has generated so much argument with majority of Abians people viewing the election as an attempt by the outgoing government led by Governor Okezie Ikpeazu Ph.D. to set landmines for the incoming government of Dr. Alex Otti OFR.

Apart from setting landmines to the incoming government, Abians view the purported move to conducta local government election as a sheer waste of scarce resources as the incoming government will certainly organize a local government election upon assumption of office in accordance with the promise made while campaigning for power.

“It is an act of unwarranted hostility if the present government dares carry out any election into the local government area in the State” so stated one of the senior citizens of Abia origin.
