Olumide Akpata Commends NBA for its Intervention in the Unlawful Arrest of Onari Taylor
I received with a palpable sense of relief, the news of the intervention of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) in the unlawful arrest of Onari Taylor, a member of the Degema Branch of the Association, by officers of the IGP Monitoring Squad of the Nigerian Police ostensibly for issuing a Notice to Quit on behalf of his Client
My relief is borne out of the fact that the outcry from Lawyers, which this rather bizarre episode has understandably elicited, would have been hollow and incomplete without the concomitant formal deprecation of the situation by our Association which of course must be immediately followed by clear and precise action.
As the NBA has alluded, this latest action of the Nigerian Police, in arresting a Lawyer essentially for doing his job, is only the latest installment from the a Police Force that has developed a worrying penchant for impunity and total disregard for the fundamental rights of citizens, including Legal Practitioners.
I commend the NBA for the steps so far taken in securing the release of our colleague and I particularly welcome the personal involvement of the NBA President, Mr Paul Usoro, SAN in this regard. However I call on the Association to ensure that more precise steps are outlined, and indeed followed through, to actualise the immediate and unconditional release of Onari Taylor.
