The Beth Torrey School for Physically and Mentally Challenged Children, located in the Lagos suburb of Okota, was the venue of the latest act of philanthropy by the International Charitable Initiative for Girl-Child and Women Foundation (ICI-GWODEF), an NGO dedicated to the empowerment of the Nigerian and African girl-child.

NEWSWIRE Law Events Magazine’s correspondent reports that the visit was led by the President of ICI-GWODEF, Barr. Abiola Laseinde, who was accompanied by the 1st and 2nd Vice-Presidents of the group, Barr. Ify Uzokwe and Mrs. Grace Ezeiruaku, respectively. The delegation also included the Public Relations Officer/Fundraising Director, Gloria Ireka, as well as Rev. (Mrs.) Peace Emeka-Idih, Nkolika Asuzu, Rev. Bulus Madaki (the only male in the delegation) and others.

The ICI-GWODEF delegation was received by the Nurse in the Home, Mrs. Adejoro, who went on to give the group a brief rundown of the school’s mission and vision. The Beth Torrey School for Physically and Mentally Challenged Children was founded in the mid-twentieth century by an American missionary, Elizabeth Torrey (1903-1977) to cater for children and young adults who needed special care and attention. An ongoing concern which depends on private sources of funding (often from NGOs such as ICI-GWODEF), as well as occasional government interventions and the generosity of public-spirited individuals, the School, according to Mrs. Adejoro, strives to advocate on behalf of the vulnerable in our society, as well as to correct the disparities in the way and manner girls and their issues are managed by the rest of society.

One of the highlights of the visit was a praise-worship session by the excited inmates and the visiting delegation. It was followed by a brief exhortation by Rev. Madaki, who told the inmates that there much reason to hope for a better tomorrow – just like the turn-around recorded by the Bible at the beginning of Acts 3.

Another highlight was the formal presentation of the relief items to the School by ICI-GWODEF. The inmates and the ICI-GWODEF group thereafter posed for a photo session as the visit came to a close.

In separate conversations with the media, the President of ICI-GWODEF, Barr. Laseinde, her 1st VP, Barr. Uzokwe, and Gloria Ireka, highlighted the theme of the 2025 commemoration of the International Day of the Girl-child – namely, The Girl I Am, The Change I Lead. They called on all stakeholders – both in the public and private sectors – to be more proactive in their care for the vulnerable in the society, especially by creating an atmosphere of inclusion, and also by ‘adopting’ one vulnerable person and sponsor them in terms of their health, nutritional and educational needs. One of the ways in which to build this culture, they said, is to enhance mobility and access in public spaces and on public transportation for vulnerable people.

The girl-child, they emphasized, was not only capable of surviving, but also of becoming a powerful agent of change in the country and beyond.
