Session 4:
It was the legendary French fashion icon, Coco Chanel, who famously said, “Fashions come and go, but STYLE IS ETERNAL.”
NEWSWIRE Law & Events Magazine’s correspondent in Lagos reports that the speakers on the 4th panel of the one-day Conference of the NBA Women’s Forum in Lagos were unanimous in asserting that style was as critical a component of the female lawyer’s brand and professional toolkit as substance.
They were there to explore the topic, ‘Elegance, Etiquette & Panache: Mastering Personal Branding for Female Lawyers.”
Moderated by Dr. Janet Adetu (an Executive & Leadership coach, as well as the CEO of JSK Consulting Group), the panel comprised of Mrs. Funmi Roberts (Principal Partner at the law firm of Funmi Roberts & Co.); Isaiah Bozimo (the former Attorney-General & Commissioner of Justice in Delta State who serves as a Partner at Broderick Bozimo & Company); Atinuke Odofin (Partner at the Africa Law Practice, ALP); and Emily Wale-Koya (Founder/CEO at the School of Personal Branding).
In their various ways, the panelists sought to help their professional colleagues identify and apply ways in which to elevate their practice/business and personal brand by means of classy dressing, impeccable manners, and the art of projecting confidence (not just in the way one ‘carries’ oneself, but also by the relent pursuit and cultivation of excellence – the better to bring one’s A-Game to the proverbial table).
Session 5:
‘Health, Wealth & Everything in Between,’ was the topic of the 5th plenary session at the Conference.
As suggested by the theme of this year’s NBAWF Confab, there are more than one way to measure true success. Another critical metric, panelists at the 5th discussion session maintained, was health and wellness.
The panel convened to broaden the conversation around the health (and especially the wellness) of female legal practitioners, and how this impacts – for better or for worse – their career progression, was moderated by Prof. Foluke Dada (the dean of the College of Law at Caleb University) and consisted of the following: Fatima Ibrahim Alli, who serves as the Chief Evolution Officer at the Leadership Evolution Nest (LENs);
Prof. Fabian Ajogwu, OFR, SAN (Senior Partner at Kenna Partners); Beatrice Eyong (the United Nations Women Country Representative in Nigeria); Dr. Maimuna Y. Kadiri (a mental health advocate, psychiatrist and psychotherapist); and
Uwa Ohiku, who is a Partner at Jackson, Etti & Edu.
According to NEWSWIRE’s correspondent, it was an animated session indeed, as it was notably enlivened in no small way by Dr. Kadiri’s forceful and humorous snippets on ways to keep illness at bay and live in a sustainable wellness bubble, so as to maintain one’s equilibrium and be able to perform at one’s peak at all times,
Session 6
In law, as in virtually every legitimate field of endeavour, sometimes we see far only because we stand on the shoulders of giants. The sixth and concluding plenary of the day was an aspirational one (if you were an early stage lawyer) a chance to learn of the career paths and trajectories of those who have risen to the top of their profession, and how they got there – what challenges they had to surmount, and how they maximized the opportunities that came their way.
It fell on Dr. Grace Adikema-Adjaegbo, PhD (the Assistant Director at the Rivers State House of Assembly) to moderate a panel comprising such leading lights as the Hon. Justice Atinuke Ipaye of the High Court of Lagos State; Prof. Oluyemisi Bamgbose, SAN (a professor of Law at the University of Ibadan); Bidemi Ademola (the Legal Director and Company Secretary at Guinness Nigeria Plc); and Mrs. Folashade Alli, SAN (Principal Partner at the law firm of Folashade Alli & Partners).
Though they represented various branches of legal work (the judiciary, academia, in-house, the public sector, litigation and arbitration, etc.), each of the panelists represented the nexus between personal and professional development – coupled with self-belief and an unquenchable desire to succeed, gender dynamics and a broad spectrum of social issues surrounding women in the legal profession.
The business end of the 4th Annual General Conference of the NBA Women Forum came to an end on that note, as conferees anticipated a fun evening at the Gala Dinner & Awards Night.
