2022 NBA ELECTIONS: Y. C. MAIKYAU, SAN, EMERGES NEXT BAR PRESIDENT

The nationwide campaigns to produce the next Executive Council of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) for the coming two years culminated on Saturday, July 16, 2022, with a day-long voting exercise, at the end of which the Abuja-based lawyer and current Chairman of the NBA’s Welfare Committee, Mr. Yakubu Chonoko Maikyau, SAN, emerged as the NBA President-elect.

The official result, made available to NEWSWIRE Law & Events Magazine showed that Maikyau polled a total of 22,342 votes (representing 64.6%) out of a total tally of 34, 512 votes, with 244 abstentions.

His closest opponent, the pioneer Chairman of the NBA’s Section on Public Interest and Development Law (SPIDEL), Chief Joe-Kyari Gadzama, SAN, scored 10, 842 votes, while the immediate past General Secretary of the Association, Jonathan Taidi, scored 1380 votes to finish third.

With this result, Maikyau is set to take office as the 31st successive President in the long and illustrious history of the Association.

The voting spanned a 24-hour period between 12am on Saturday, when the ballots opened, and 11.59pm on the same day, when they closed.

Altogether, 11 positions were contested for – including those of the General Secretary, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Vice-Presidents, the Welfare Secretary, and so forth.
