It was yet another feather in the illustrious cap of foremost Nigerian lawyer, Yakubu C. Maikyau, SAN, as he received an award of appreciation from the Lagos State Branch International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) in recognition of his role in making the 2022 FIDA Law Week Dinner a successful celebration in his capacity as Chairman of the event.
Expressing his appreciation for the honour, the learned Senior Advocate paid tribute to the unique role of women in the society, saying they bore a greater responsibility of ensuring the welfare and harmony of both the home and the larger society. Women, he said, are our mothers in more ways than one.
Maikyau went on to reiterate his longstanding advocacy for a more robust involvement by women in politics and governance. Referring to his proposal for the amendment of the Constitution to eliminate the requirement of political parties as the only acceptable platform to run for elective positions, the learned silk said political parties are controlled by a small but powerful elite – a situation which has hampered the fortunes of women in politics. To redress this imbalance, he encouraged female lawyers to rise up to onerous but necessary task of restructuring, recovering and repositioning the Nigerian polity and society.
The theme of the event was, ‘Education as a Catalyst for Boosting the Self-Image of the African Child.’
