Mrs. Alexandria Chidi Onyemelukwe, daughter of second republic Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, was yesterday unveiled as the deputy governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, for the November 18, 2017 governorship election in Anambra State.
The PDP governorship candidate Mr. Oseloka Obaze, who introduced Mrs. Onyemelukwe to a large crowd of party faithful at a ceremony in Awka, the state capital, said Mrs. Onyemelukwe would be his partner in turning Anambra State around and returning it to an upward-moving trajectory, where the state would not only work, but would be an example for other states. Mrs. Onyemelukwe’s selection, he said, signified a strong demonstration of his commitment to gender mainstreaming, women empowerment, and a 60-40 percentage targeted ratio in political appointments. He added that he looked forward to collaborating and sharing responsibilities with her in delivering good governance and the dividends of democracy to the people in Anambra State, adding that she possessed the requisite administrative experience to drive his broad vision of taking the state to the very zenith where it truly deserved to be.
Obaze described his running-mate, popularly known as ‘Lady Chidi’ as a promoter of qualitative education, the advancement of women affairs, for greater female involvement in governance – having run a foundation that is critically focused on the development of human capital via education.
A former Chairman, Board of Directors of the Federal Housing Authority and Special Assistant to the President of Nigeria on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs), Mrs. Chidi Onyemelukwe is a graduate of Law from the University of Wales, UK and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1990. She also bagged a Masters Degree in International Law and Diplomacy and Master of Business Administration from the Universities of Lagos and Duquesne in the United States of America respectively. She had a brief stint as an Adjunct Professor of Finance in Florida, USA and is currently involved in Real Estate Law Practice and International Business.
In her acceptance speech, Mrs. Onyemelukwe promised to assist Obaze in turning around Anambra State, assuring that they would provide selfless service to the people, and charged all PDP members, and especially women, to join hands to win the trust of Anambrarians for the ticket that, she said, would present a better alternative to take the state to the Promised Land.
