12 Year-old Student wins FCT Spelling Bee Competition
A 12 year-old-girl, Bobbo Aishatu yesterday, emerged winner of the 2018 FCT Spelling Bee competition for junior secondary schools in the FCT.
The event, powered by Decipher Solution, began with 87 students participating in the first round of the screening which involved a written test.
At the end of the first round, only 30 students made it to the second round. The number was further reduced to eight students battling it in the third round and only three, in the final round and in the end, young Aishatu of Glisten International Academy, Jabi, emerged winner.

Eleven year-old Jedidah Abegye of Excellent Kiddies Montessori, Maitama came second, while 10-year-old Ifesinachi Ekunno of Federal Government College, Kwali finished in third place.
Speaking after the presentation of awards to the winners, the founder of Decipher Solution, Zainab Haruna, expressed delight on the success of the event and hailed the organisers for introducing new activities like the essay competition and workshop in this year’s competition. She said activities like the new ones will make next year’s competition even greater.
She however expressed disappointment in the noticeable absence of stakeholders in the education sector, but expressed optimism that they will be present at next year’s event so that the gap that evolves with their absence can be breached.

Speaking in her keynote address, the chairperson of the event and a renowned broadcast journalist, Mrs. Eugenia Abu, urged the children to continue to harness their potential even when it seems nothing is working. She explained that creativity can be shared and taught, and urged them to learn from authors who have written before them.
Also speaking at the event, Mr. Ekuma Eze, representing the Nigerian Bottling Company, commended Decipher Solution for organising the competition because of the role education plays in the formation of youths.
He explained that his organisation has designed empowerment programmes to help youths who are graduates of tertiary institutions to get employment.
The first winner of the competition took home a N200, 000 cash price, while the second winner and third winners took home N150, 000 and N100, 000 respectively.
