The convergence of young lawyers at the exquisite premises of the law firm of Aluko & Oyebode was a rare treat as the firm’s staffers warmly welcomed their junior colleagues to a gladsome evening.

Immediately after the introduction of the guest speaker, Mr. Tunde Fagbohunlu, SAN by the CLE & Mentorship Chairman, Tobenna Erojikwe, the learned silk gave the junior ones a faint idea of what the evening would be like.

“As young lawyers, you need to understand what it takes to start a law firm in order to make informed decisions that will impact your law practice. Whether you have just graduated from law school or have been working at a law firm for some years, starting your own practice is always an option. Although it is scary to consider putting on the pilot’s hat and flying your own plane, but there are guidelines to follow. I believe there is no reason why you cannot learn to fly successfully,” Fagbohunlu emphasized.

He introduced the renowned name ‘Gbenga Oyebode, MFR’ to the guests, and the captivating evening erupted in thunderous applause.

In his exploration of the topic, ‘Law as a Business’, the host, Gbenga Oyebode advised junior lawyers to see the practice of law as business rather than profession in which one needs to understand fundamentals and attractions. Talent, he said, was important because of the kind of law firm one intends to build. ‘The reality is that life is getting a lot more complicated and the more complicated it is the more we need to play to skill sense. And peoples’ skill is what we look for and pay for. In this modern time that is what you go for and hire. So I think it is good to recognize that our talent is a particularly key’.

He also emphasized sustainability as a key factor to success.“It is better to go into partnership that would be profitable in the long run than to open a law firm that will not measure or compete in today’s world. Choosing the right partner is very important in setting up a partnership; the same goes with choosing the right law firm. The partner that is hiring you is not doing you a favour, you may be doing them a favour by lending yourself to them at a crucial part of your career, where as in the actual fact you are ready to step up. And if you work for the wrong person the trajectory is not up, but actually down. So the decision around where to work is actually like saying whom do I marry? Some might hire you and bring you down, either because they don’t pay you well give you the right opportunities or are not visionary. It doesn’t mean that all employers of labour are visionary people, just that the environment is not a visionary environment.

Partnership, the host continued, was often times more reliable and profitable than other forms of practice; you might be the youngest partner but the highest earner because of the kind of clients you attract to the firm. The American pattern of compensation is known as ‘Eat what you kill’. If you have the highest paying client you earn more than your senior partners.

Oyebode asked the junior lawyers to make a career choice in the fast growing and developing areas like the telecoms, aviation, IT, entertainment, Oil & Gas, medical and healthcare law. He said, “If you annex it you might get your breakthrough”.

The Chairman of NBA Lagos Branch, Chukwuka Ikwuazom who is also a Partner with Aluko & Oyebode,  praised Mr. Gbenga Oyebode, with whom he has had a long and close relationship, for hosting the first in the series of Group Mentorship Sessions of the NBA Lagos Branch.

“We are grateful to Mr. Oyebode for sharing his wealth of experience with us. It is a wonderful knowledge you have passed unto us this evening.’ Ikwuazom said. ‘We are also grateful to a Senior Partner of Aluko & Oyebode, Mr. Tunde Fagbohunlu, SAN who was our guest speaker,”

The Lagos Bar Chair also revealed that in the near future, the Continuing Legal Education and Mentorship Committee of the Branch would approach distinguished members of the Branch to sign up to this laudable initiative, announcing also that a number of other distinguished members of the Branch had also agreed to host the Group Mentorship Sessions in the near future.
