Online Poll Shows Olumide Akpata the Preferred Candidate for The 2020 NBA Presidential Elections
As the NBA national elections draw near, there have been speculations regarding the likely contestants and their rating amongst Nigerian lawyers.
Information reaching us suggests that the leading aspirants for the presidential elections are Templars Partner and immediate past chairman of the NBA Section on Business Law, Mr Olumide Akpata; Managing Partner of SPA Ajibade, Dr. Tunde Ajibade, SAN; Founding Partner of Dele Adesina LP, Mr. Dele Adesina, SAN; and a former chairman of the Ikeja Branch of the NBA Mr. Adesina Ogunlana.
However, an online poll conducted by “Nigerian Bar Association Members”, a Facebook group comprising over 13,000 Nigerian lawyers, has tipped Mr.Olumide Akpata to be the most popular candidate amongst the voters in the poll.
From the result annnounced by the organisers of the online poll on 14 January 2020, Mr. Akpata scored 203 votes to lead the other contestants.
Sequel to the poll, most of the lawyers with whom we interacted expressed their satisfaction over its outcome. When asked why Mr. Olumide Akpata is popular amongst lawyers, one of our interviewees stated that Mr. Akpata’s excellent stint as NBA SBL chair as well as his passion for empowering young lawyers through capacity building stood him out from the other aspirants.
According to another interviewee, the result of this online poll demonstrates that voters will support the candidates of their choice in the forthcoming NBA elections on the basis of merit and previous record of service without paying any heed to ethnic considerations. In her view, the universal suffrage brought about by the 2015 NBA Constitution commendably democratises the electoral process thereby giving every eligible voter the freedom to choose their preferred candidate without any let or hindrance.
Whilst it is unclear how things would pan out in the coming elections, we believe that this online poll could pass for a popularity test which appears to give a possible indication of how the voting mass of Nigerian lawyers may exercise their franchise when they elect the leaders of Africa’s largest national bar later this year.
