NBA CALLS ON INSPECTOR GENERAL OF POLICE TO INVESTIGATE THE RAPE AND MURDER OF MISS VERA OMOZUWA

The attention of the Nigerian Bar Association has been drawn to the dastard incident of rape which led to the death of Miss Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, a 100-level student of the Department of Microbiology, University of Benin (UNIBEN), in Ikpoba Hill axis of Benin City, Edo State.

Miss Omozuwa was alleged to have been raped after her head was smashed with a fire extinguisher by some unidentified persons at a Pentecostal church in Benin, which consequently led to her death.

The Nigerian Bar Association condemns the dastard act and calls upon the Inspector General of Police and the State Security Service to do a thorough investigation of the case and ensure that all the culprits are made to face the law. The attack on young Vera Omozuwa serves as a a further call on government at all levels not to pay lip service to the increasing incidence of violence against women and the girl-child. The NBA is ready to partner with the various governments through its specialized forum, NBA Women Forum to come up with policies that will engender more protection of the rights and privileges of women and the girl-child.

The NBA through the Benin branch shall continue to monitor the investigation of the case.

National Publicity Secretary, NBA.
