The debate, organised by the LASU Debating Society, had participants from the Faculties of Science, Management Sciences, Arts and Law.

The topic of the debate was: “Improving the Educational System in Nigeria: New Curriculum or New Teaching Hands”.

In his address, Dr. Obayori Femi, Dean Students’ Affairs, applauded the debating society for their efforts and achievements, which he said had made the university proud.

He stressed the importance of debates and public speaking in the society, saying that it involved a lot of intellectual engagement which could bring about solutions to society’s challenges.

“I want to appreciate the debating society for how far they have come and for doing us proud at all levels.”

The pioneers started this team voluntarily and the university management is proud of them.

“Great speakers have always played a very important role in the society, forming the basis of arguments that have helped to find solutions to some issues in the society.”

“In public speaking and debates, you must be logical, sort out facts and communicate in a well-organised manner.”

It is a serious intellectual engagement. “You must be able to use your hands, brains and perfect your language because man is a social and speaking animal,” he said.

The president of the debating society, Eleso Moyosore, expressed her delight at the growth of the society in terms of membership.

Moyosore said in an interview with NAN that the society had received new members, who are passionate about public speaking.

“I must say that the growth of the society is very impressive. We have a lot of young people who are passionate, burning with the desire to join the team.”

“That’s why we had to organize an event like this, to let people come and see what the society is doing,” she said.

Moyosore also expressed her gratitude toward the university management for supporting the society with funds.

“I want to appreciate the management because they’re beginning to understand why they should support us financially,” she said.

She encouraged students to develop the skill of public speaking, regardless of their course of study.

“Public speaking is a personal skill that no one can run away from. I would advise students to develop the skill of public speaking, regardless of their course of study,” she added.
