


Press Release on the Kidnapping and Assassination of Lawyers in Rivers State
At an emergency meeting of the Executive members of the Nigerian Bar Association in Rivers State to wit: Port Harcourt, Ahoada, Isiokpo, Bori, Okrika, Degema, Okehi and Omoku Branches do observed as follows:

- Observed with dismay the incessant kidnapping of lawyers and their family members in Rivers State, particularly, the recent kidnap of Iyke Emelogu, Esq. on the 4th of August, 2019 at Unity Estate, Eneka, Obio/Akpor LGA, Sunday Wonmo, Esq. Mr. Monima Omuboye Peters, David Uranta, Rivers State.
- Condemn the attack and assassination of lawyers in the state, including the murder of Frank Igwe, Esq., Ken Atsuete, Esq., Anthony Wakama, Esq. among others.
- The increasing rate of cultism, armed robbery, gangsterism and other criminal activities in the state.
- We commend the Rivers State Government for setting up the “Operation sting” and donating gun boats, vehicles and security gadgets and equipment.
Consequently, the meeting resolved as follows:
- Demand the immediate and unconditional release of all lawyers in the custody of kidnappers particularly, Mr. Iyke Emelogu who is still in the custody of the kidnappers.
- We call on all the security agencies in Rivers State to utilize the gesture of the Rivers State Government in the search and immediate release of our colleagues, and for the kidnappers to immediately release those still in their custody unharmed and unconditionally.
- The meeting further resolved that in the event or failure to comply with these demands, it shall in the nearest future direct all lawyers in Rivers State to withdraw their professional services from all cases of kidnapping, cultism, armed robbery, etc. pending at all courts or before any security outfit.
- The Bar in Rivers State enjoin the perpetrators of crime in the State to desist forthwith and endeavour to engage in meaningful activities.
