The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, has reiterated the parliament’s commitment to strengthening the judiciary, deepening its independence, and improving the efficiency of the nation’s justice system.

Speaking at the opening session of the Conference of All Nigerian Judges of the Superior Courts in Abuja on Monday, the Speaker, represented by the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, highlighted ongoing legislative efforts aimed at constitutional reforms, enhanced funding, and oversight measures designed to boost judicial performance.

He disclosed that the House has advanced 23 constitutional amendment bills targeting critical reforms in the judiciary and the electoral process.

Abbas noted that proposals to secure full financial autonomy for the judiciary and modernise court operations are making significant progress.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Levinus Nwabughiogu, quoted him as saying, “This conference convenes at a pivotal moment for our nation. Under President Bola Tinubu, the Renewed Hope Agenda underscores the importance of strong institutions. Justice remains central to our national aspirations.

“As the President recently emphasised, our justice system must ensure welfare, drive economic growth, and uphold security for all.

“The House has introduced 23 constitutional amendment bills this year, addressing vital reforms in both the justice sector and electoral processes.

“These initiatives demonstrate our shared conviction that judicial independence, swift justice delivery, and transparency are essential to sustaining democracy.”

The Speaker highlighted areas where the legislature and judiciary are collaborating to enhance justice delivery, including institutional independence, improved capacity, and consistent funding.

He added that enhanced remuneration, digital court systems, and upgraded infrastructure are crucial to safeguarding judicial autonomy and restoring public confidence.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” he said, noting that the legislature is committed to expanding digital case-management systems, reviewing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, and upgrading court facilities nationwide.

He urged judges to provide actionable recommendations at the conference.

Abbas also underscored the importance of harmony among the three arms of government, stating that legislative reforms, executive actions, and judicial decisions must work in tandem for the overall benefit of Nigerians.

He assured the judiciary of the unwavering support of the House of Representatives.

“The House will continue to be a reliable partner in these reform efforts. I commend every judge here for your integrity, resilience, and unwavering commitment to justice.

“Your work in safeguarding rights, promoting peace, and bolstering investor confidence is deeply appreciated,” he added.

He expressed optimism that the conference would produce practical solutions to strengthen the justice sector.

“Together, we can build a judiciary that is independent, efficient, accessible, and widely respected,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, on Monday addressed the Abuja Chapter Law Week of the International Federation of Women Lawyers, urging women in the legal profession to champion the Women Reserved Seats Bill.

Kalu explained that the proposed legislation seeks to enhance women’s participation in political leadership and ensure their meaningful contribution to national development.

“The 10th House of Representatives, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, has prioritised inclusion, fairness, participation, and institutional development that reflects the aspirations of all Nigerians,” he said.

He urged members of FIDA and other stakeholders to engage actively with the legislative process.

“Your expertise can help turn this proposal into law. Nigerian female lawyers have the influence to shape the nation. The same excellence you display in courtrooms can elevate public advocacy.

“Speak through articles, petitions, hearings, bar associations, classrooms, and community platforms. A unified voice will make inclusive governance a reality,” Kalu added.
