Hon. Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, JSC, CON, CFR: Tribute to a Legal Giant – from Newswire Law & Events Magazine

It is with profound gratitude to the Almighty God that we at Newswire Multimedia, publishers of Newswire Law & Events Magazine, join the family of our Advisory Board member, Mr. Dagogo Karibi-Whyte, in mourning the passing of his illustrious father, The Hon. Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, CON, CFR, retired Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The late jurist was a giant among his peers, a pillar in his chosen profession, and a colossus who bestrode the nation’s jurisprudence with excellence, courage, diligence and class.

We recall with profound respect the fact that the late jurist sat on the country’s apex court at a time when the nation’s judiciary stood on the vanguard of our collective quest for justice and fair play, in a society anchored on the rule of law. It was his unwavering commitment to this ideal that saw traverse a long legal career that began in the early 1970s in the Rivers State Ministry of Justice (where he rose to the position of Solicitor-General) as well as a stint in academia, before he embarked on the judicial career that was to cement his legacy in the annals of Nigeria’s modern history.

Justice Karibi-Whyte’s service as chairman of several commissions of enquiry was no less impactful. In particular, his judicial acumen shone like a million stars during his service as Chairman of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia at the Hague (Netherlands) in 1993, as well as the Nigerian Constitutional Conference between 1994 and 1995.

In addition, his intellectual sagacity, curiosity and erudition were to be seen in the more than a dozen books and over 55 publications he authored throughout his career, as well as his public speaking engagements, which were the subject of universal interest and admiration.

A man of proven integrity and stellar accomplishments, a family man and a leader in his community, Justice Karibi-Whyte deserved every one of the accolades he was showered with during his eventful lifetime, and every second of the 88 years God gifted him with. Though he passed on in the twilight of life, his demise is nonetheless a huge loss, not just to his family and the people of Rivers State, but to the entire nation, and in particular the world of Nigerian and international jurisprudence.

We commiserate with our Advisory board member, Mr. Dagogo Karibi-Whyte and all the survivors of the late Supreme Court Justice on this loss, and we pray God to grant them the fortitude to bear this loss.

May the legacies of the Hon. Justice Adolphus Karibi-Whyte, JSC, CFR, CON continue to inspire future generations of legal practitioners – on both the Bar and the Bench – for years to come.
