Grand Dinner Ends Commencement of 2017/2018 Legal Year Celebrations

The commencement of the 2017/2018 Legal Year, which also marked the 50th Anniversary of the judiciary in Lagos state, came to a climax on Friday 13th of October, 2017 with a dinner which was graced by eminent personalities from across the state and beyond.

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode was represented by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Adeniji Kazeem.

In the governor’s goodwill message, he promised to improve welfare packages for judges in the state, urged them to contribute their experience and expertise to the service of the state.

The governor appeal for continuity in the judiciary. “Reforms in the judicial sector is continuous and the government is committed to boosting the capacity of the state judiciary,” he said.

The Oba of Lagos, His Majesty, Rilwan Akiolu led a retinue of other royal fathers to the event.

In his remarks, Oba Akiolu congratulated the Acting Chief Judge of the state, Hon. Justice O. O. Oke on this momentous occasion, and described it as a percursor of greater things to come.

In her response, the Acting CJ reiterated the theme of her mission statement, and pledged a new engagement with members of the Bar. She called for a new level of commitment and diligence among judicial staffers, as it would no longer be business as usual.

Justice Oke called on lawyers to desist from the practice of prolonging cases unnecessarily.

She also thanked the governor for all his efforts in ensuring an effective judiciary in the state.

The event, which was compered by ace actor Kunle Bamtefa (of Fuji House of Commotion) also recorded a high turnout of Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

One of the highlights of the evening was the presentation of awards to deserving Judges, which was performed by Hon. Justice Bode Rhodes-Vivour.

In a one on one chat with Newswire Law and Events Magazine, Justice Rhodes Vivour said, “It is home coming for me because Lagos is where I started my legal profession and I am always happy to be part of any judicial or legal gathering.”

The cutting of the anniversary cake was presided over by the former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Femi Pedro.

As the guests savored the delicacies on offer, it was also an opportunity to exchange pleasantries, make new acquaintances and renew old ones, as well as gird their loins for what promises to be an eventful new Legal Year in Lagos State.
