The Commandant of the National Defence College, Rear Admiral Abdullahi Ahmed, has called for a comprehensive review of the college’s curriculum, describing it as outdated and misaligned with contemporary realities.

Ahmed said the college’s curriculum had not been updated for a long time and emphasised the importance of equipping participants with practical skills relevant to today’s security and governance challenges.

He made the remarks on Monday during a courtesy visit to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission in Abuja.

This was contained in a statement by the EFCC spokesman, Dele Oyewale.

“In taking over the college, I have discovered that the curriculum has not been reviewed for quite some time, and I feel that it should be reviewed in relation to our current realities. I feel that this agency would be of help. So, I want us to work closely in terms of what we put in the new curriculum. We cannot do it better than the master.

“We will need some insights on how to manage public funds. We want participants to learn about managing public funds.

“This is the input we want from this place, and we want experts to come and talk to participants by the next course on things like that, so that any office they happen to go and take over, they know exactly what to do,” Ahmed was quoted as saying.

He also commended the EFCC for its efforts in asset recovery and building public trust, adding, “If there’s any research you want us to carry out, we have a centre for strategic research that can support your work.”

In response, Olukoyede welcomed the collaboration, noting the importance of inter-agency synergy in achieving results.

He highlighted potential areas for collaboration, including maritime investigations, fraud detection, and emerging financial crimes such as cryptocurrency fraud.

“Our mandate is to fight financial crimes, but there are clear intersections with the work you do in training and policy formulation.

“By integrating developments in financial crimes into your curriculum, we can ensure the College’s programmes reflect current threats and strategies,” he said.

The two agencies agreed to commence joint efforts to update the NDC curriculum, with the EFCC providing expertise on financial and economic crimes to enhance participants’ understanding of modern governance challenges.

The NDC is Nigeria’s premier institution for training senior military officers, government officials, and security personnel in national security, strategic studies, and policy formulation.

Its curriculum is designed to prepare leaders for complex challenges in defence, governance, and public administration.

This collaboration reflects a broader push within Nigeria’s security and governance institutions to foster inter-agency cooperation, adapt training to contemporary threats, and produce leaders capable of making informed, practical decisions in both military and civilian spheres.
